Encountering a coyote can be an unnerving especially when you least expect it, however these sightings are common in urban environments. They may have dog-like features and behave comfortably in your back yard but don’t let that fool you, they are wildlife and deserve to be left alone.

So what do I do or not do if I come across a coyote?

Here are some guidelines to help dissipate the concern and make the interaction a positive experience for both the coyote and yourself:

  • Firstly, keep calm and stop walking.
  • Don’t turn your back and run.
  • Maintain eye contact and walk back slowly.
  • Make yourself big and loud by waving your arms, stomping your feet, lifting your backpack or jacket over your head and shouting “GO AWAY!”.
  • Carrying and using an umbrella. This sudden change in your body outline is unsettling and not something the coyote wants to stick around for.
  • If you have small children with you, pick them up and continue to be loud and intimidating.
  • Slowly edge towards buildings or people if they are around to create a feeling of safety in numbers.

If you are on a community group, posting online about your sighting informs others to avoid an area, especially those walking small dogs. This in turn protects the coyote and residents, and reduces conflict.

Should I call someone?
