Which wasp do I have?
Identifying where the wasp activity is will help identify the species of wasp.
Yellowjackets are the most common in Vancouver and across the Lower Mainland. Typically building nests in structures such as as under siding/flashing, wall voids, attics and crawlspaces. They are small and aggressive with bright yellow and black markings. Aerial yellowjackets however build visible nests in trees or on structures.
Paper wasps are larger wasps building large exterior nests under roof eaves, soffit angles and within trees. Being darker in colour with yellow or red patches, they have a thin waist and long legs, and considered less aggressive than the yellowjackets.
Bald-faced hornets build paper-like nests on buildings and in vegetation. Black in colour with white markings, they are larger in size and less aggressive than the yellowjackets.
Mud daubers create small mud nests on buildings. They are not aggressive and solitary.
Did you know?
Although bees are often given all the glory, wasps are excellent pollinators too and are a vital reason for the existence of figs as they are only pollinated by a particular species of wasp small enough to enter.
