Chew through wood like butter!
There is a reason why you should not only seal their current access points but also any vulnerabilities to ensure squirrels cannot access your home. Squirrels are rodents and so will keep chewing to create entry points. Once inside this persistent chewing will do damage to the interior of your home and structure. It's best to get them out as soon as possible!
Do you know where squirrels' favourite spots are on your home?
Squirrels are apt at findings access points into homes, here are common places used to enter a structure:
- Vents: Plastic roof vents are a sure spot to easily access as they lead to a void in the attic and provide a direct route into the home.
- Gutterline gaps: Roof line seams and gutterlines deteriorate over time leading to gaps and vulnerabilities that can be easily exploited for access.
- Clay tile roofs: Due to the placement of tiles, a gap is accessible every 5" into the roof. Ridgelines and corner caps are also prone to easy entry.
- Soffit angles: These areas offer concealed overhangs on the roof where squirrels can comfortably chew or push up soffiting without being seen or exposed to the elements. Once they create a hole, they can easily enter and exit without drawing attention to themselves.
- Chimneys: Uncapped chimneys offer a great site for nesting.
- Other holes: Existing holes made from other wildlife such as flickers give squirrels a head start as they work on creating a larger gap to gain entry into the structure.
I like squirrels but don't want them on my house!
There are deterrence options such as pruning away overhanging tree branches and vegetation allowing ease of access for squirrels onto your roof and removing attractants such as messy bird feeders.
However the only way to prevent squirrel from using your home as theirs is squirrel proofing to ensure they stay out.
