Keeping doors closed:
As a way to deter rodents from using open doors, ensure they are closed when not in use.
Any doors being used by multiple people at different times of the day are often found to be propped open thus allowing direct entry for rodents. To prevent this, have fob access installed and automated closure.
Rodent-proofing doors:
Even with a door closed, unless rodent-proofed, mice and rats can easily chew underneath or along the trim to enter on pedestrian and garage doors.
This is where effective rodent-proofing comes in. Using materials mice and rats cannot chew through, which is custom to the door and its specific operation.
Things to look out for:
- Only use rodent-proof door sweeps which have specialized materials included in the sweep which cannot be chewed through. Rubber door sweeps are not effective.
- Install the correct size on the door both in length and width so there are no gaps.
- Look at the edge of doors around the trim for access points.
- Ensure rodent-proof door sweeps are installed correctly on garage doors for a tight fit. Shimming the door may be needed for a snug installation.
- Ensure pet doors are automated and close tightly when not in use.
