We aren’t the only ones celebrating the warmer temperatures and longer days of Spring, wildlife are actively seeking out mates, nesting and raising their young.
Although this heightened activity transforms back yards and wild spaces, it can be a stressful time for homeowners if the new family happens to occur in their attic or in their shed.
So who should we look out for?
- Raccoons are among the first animals to give birth starting in mid-March. Often mothers will seek out attic spaces by pulling back soffiting, on patios using furniture or stored items to hide away or a quiet shed to hunker down in to give birth.
- Squirrels nesting in attics, chimneys or soffits will start to have babies late March/early April. You may notice insulation being pulled out or squirrels scampering into a hole with nesting vegetation all in the efforts to make a cozy nest.
- Birds such as starlings, sparrows, pigeons, flickers, crows, seagulls and Canadian geese will lay eggs and raise chicks in areas close to or on buildings between April and August. Their nesting location will depend on the species. Remember all active nests are protected!
- Skunks have litters of between 4 – 6 kits, typically arriving between May and June. Mothers will seek out areas under shed, front steps or patios to den down and raise their young. Their pungent odour often helps to warn others to stay away while mum works hard to keep her young safe.
